Broadway Box-Office Analysis, Aug. 12-18, 2013

Playbill's newest weekly feature examines the box-office trends of the past week.
Box offices losses — both big and small — were near uniform almost across the Broadway board this week, with only a handful of shows showing a gain. This was likely due to audiences lessening as annual August holidays take hold and people find their entertainment outside the city. Collective gross for the 23 playing shows (one less than last week, with the close of The Nance) was down from $23,335,894 to $21,839,390, and 14,000 fewer theatregoers bought tickets.
Soul Doctor, the biographical musical about the adventures of the "Singing Rabbi" Shlomo Carlebach, opened this past week to tepid reviews. The take for the week was 28% of the potential, while audiences sat at 88% capacity. Given the notices, those figures are unlikely to change.
As with last week, Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark lost a performance and the revenue with it. The problem this time wasn't technical difficulties, but the injury of one of the performers, that stopped the show. The seven remaining performances added up to 64% of the potential take.
Wicked returned to eight shows a week, after doing nine last week. This accounted for a $182,000 drop of collected monies. For the seven-day period, it played to 96% capacity.
Full-capacity audiences were harder to attain for the week. Only four shows scaled that height: Kinky Boots, Matilda, Pippin and The Book of Mormon.
Bringing up the rear, box-office-wise, was the Beatles faux concert Let It Be, which collected only $317,000 — 24% of its possible intake. Not surprisingly, the show announced that it would end its run early, on Sept. 1.
