Houston's TUTS Underground Will Stage Murder Ballad in 2014
By Adam Hetrick
TUTS Underground, the new programming series from Houston's Theatre Under the Stars that produces contemporary musicals, will present Murder Ballad as the final production in its 2013-14 season.
The rock musical was recently seen Off-Broadway at the Union Square Theatre under the direction of Trip Cullman. It was conceived by Julia Jordan with book and lyrics by Jordan and music and lyrics by indie rock singer/songwriter Juliana Nash. It will run April 15-27, 2014.
TUTS will take a page from the immersive New York staging. According to press materials, "During the production, theatre goers will be part of the action thanks to a fully operational bar, which serves as the story’s setting."
Here's how it's billed: "A love triangle gone wrong, Murder Ballad centers on Sara, an Upper West Sider who seemingly has it all but whose downtown past lingers enticingly and dangerously in front of her. This sexy, explosive, new rock musical explores the complications of love, the compromises we make, and the betrayals that can ultimately undo us."
Previously announced titles in the series include Lizzie, 50 Shades! and Hands on a Hardbody.
Performances will be held in Zilkha Hall, a 500-seat theatre located in Hobby Center.
"TUTS Underground has been a dream of the organization's for a long time, and we are thrilled to finally make it a reality. Through our strong New York City connections, we are granted unparalleled access to the freshest, most innovative musicals coming out of the Broadway community. As a multi-million dollar musical theatre organization, we have the unique opportunity to take new material from obscurity to notoriety right here in Houston. That is pretty exciting," said John Breckenridge, TUTS CEO and president, in a statement.
