CUE & A REVISITED: "Pop Culture Guilty Pleasures"; Over 70 Actors Respond
By Playbill Staff
September 2, 2013
From "Dance Moms" and "The Real Housewives," to Lady Gaga, Joan Rivers and Katy Perry, these are the pop culture guilty pleasures that entertain New York City actors when they're not busy dazzling audiences.
(Clicking on a name bolded in blue will take readers to that actor's entry in the Playbill Vault.)
"Glee." I must have unwittingly been a closet fan of musicals all along. I'm so sad to hear of the recent tragic death of one of its stars, Cory Monteith.
"Dance Moms." I know. I hate me, too.
Artistic competition shows. I might be the last person in New York still watching “Project Runway.”
"Collapse" by Jared Diamond
Alton Fitzgerald White
"The Walking Dead"
Pink Berry, is that still pop culture?
"The Real Housewives." I don’t miss an episode.
Bryan Terrell Clark
Silly pop music... even Ke$ha
E! Fashion Police
"Dance Moms," "Drag Race," "Toddlers and Tiaras" and yes… The Kardashians.
"America's Next Top Model" Booty Tooch! Smize!
Bravo. I am a junkie and Andy "Cohens" is my boo! (I made his last name plural on purpose, it's this cute thing that we do, only he doesn't know me and doesn't know that I do that.)
UFC and "48 Hours." My wife hates that I watch these shows but I enjoy them.
Watching "New Girl"
Old school Mariah Carey
Nicki Minaj. Just so wonderfully out there.
"Dr. Katz" and "Arrested Development" (and I don't feel guilty!)
Ha if we're talking "guilty," then probably Beyonce or Ke$ha. Also "Jersey Shore" and "Flavor of Love." Flava Flaaaaave!!
"The Chew." It just looks like they have so much fun on that show! And they just laugh and eat and eat and laugh... oh man, I love it.
“Bachelor Pad." I’ve never seen “The Bachelor” or “The Bachelorette” but “Bachelor Pad” was some of the finest reality television I have ever seen. The season finale this year still haunts me. It’s THE WORST. Check it out.
PSY's Gangnam Style! I can't stop watching that man dance!!!
"The Walking Dead"
I get all my pop culture news from Michael Buckley of the "What the Buck" show on YouTube. He is a hysterical guy and one of the first people to support me as a filmmaker. I owe a lot to him!
"The Bachelor/Bachelorette." I love it so much.
"Call Me Maybe"
"Real Housewives of New York"
I like to keep up with the Kardashians...
The Housewives on Bravo. All of 'em.
I am more than a little ashamed of this but... “Dance Moms.” Lordy.
Jay Armstrong Johnson
"Call Me Maybe"
I love Brit pop without judgment, the good and the terrible.
Haskell and I have Justin Bieber dance parties in the living room
Elizabeth A. Davis
Katy Perry's song, "Teenage Dream"
Miley Cyrus' song "Party in the USA." Don't know why, but I am guilty as charged!
Jennifer Laura Thompson
Nikki Renee Daniels
Anything involving a "Real Housewife"
"The Ultimate Fighter" …or …… TOWIE (aka "The Only Way Is Essex"). Sorry!
YouTube videos of skateboarding accidents
I don't believe in guilty pleasure. Only in pleasure...
Give me a good viral video any day.
Taylor Swift, but who feels guilty??!!
Going to work in the East Village
Late-night comedy clubs
Watching "The Biggest Loser." They get SO thin by the end!!!!!
The Black Eyed Peas. They cannot make a song that isn't catchy.
Beyonce and Rihanna
Watching any of the Hoarding shows. It's more sad, of course, than pleasurable.
"Jersey Shore." It's just filthy and I'm so into it.
Anything MAC. Every year I’m one of the first in line for any new Apple product.
Ummmm.... E! and everything that channel has to offer.
"Project Runway" and "Wipeout"
"Glee" - need I say more? And I don't even feel that guilty!
Hulu.com pleases me endlessly.
Watching every reality show I say that I hate.
"Real Housewives of New York City" is the trump card, I think.
I did watch a couple of episodes of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" hoping to see some of my neighbors.
Trashy reality TV shows. I am fascinated that people actually go on those things! It's like a bad car wreck… I can't look away, but I want to!
This isn't pop culture at all, but that program on TLC about hoarders is fascinating. It's the psychology. I can't look away.
Lady Gaga. Although she may transcend “pop.” By saying that, I acknowledge the fact that I am a full blown fan.
