Signature Theatre Company's Miss Saigon, Featuring New Material, Extends Run Again
By Andrew Gans
Signature Theatre's all-new production of the award-winning musical Miss Saigon, which is directed by Signature artistic director Eric Schaeffer, has extended its run for a second time.
Miss Saigon began performances in the MAX Theatre Aug. 16 and was originally scheduled to run through Sept. 22. The limited engagement was recently extended through Sept. 29 and now will play an additional week through Oct. 6.
This production also premieres the new song “Maybe,” written for the character of Ellen.
The cast is led by Diana Huey as Kim, Gannon O'Brien as Chris and Thom Sesma as the Engineer. They are joined by Erin Driscoll as Ellen, Chris Sizemore as John and Christopher Mueller as Tuey.
Cheryl Daro plays Gigi. Stephen Gregory Smith, James Gardiner, Gannon O’Brien, Vincent Kempski, Nicholas Yenson, Kevin Kulp, Ryan Sellers, Katie Mariko Murray, Tamara Young and Eunice Bae round out the cast.
"Audiences are in for an amazing experience – the reinvention of a beloved musical," said artistic director Schaeffer in a recent statement. "Signature is pulling out all the stops on this production with a terrific cast, full-size orchestra, and a set that engulfs the entire 276 seat theatre. I can think of no better way to kick off our 24th season than with a new environmental production of Miss Saigon.”
The creative team also includes Karma Camp (choreographer), Adam Koch (scenic designer), Frank Labowitz (costume designer), Chris Lee (lighting designer), Matt Rowe (sound designer) and Anne Nesmith (wig designer). Gabriel Mangiante is the music director, and Kerry Epstein is production stage manager.
Created by the acclaimed writers of Les Miserables, this modern, rock-infused adaptation of Puccini’s 1904 opera Madame Butterfly "explores the ongoing impact of love, loss, and the collision of cultures during the Vietnam War," according to press notes.
Miss Saigon features music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr. and Alain Boublil, adapted from the original French lyrics by Boublil. Orchestrations are by William David Brohn.
Tickets start at $40 and are available by phone at (703) 573-SEAT, online at signature-theatre.org, or in person at the Signature Box Office at 4200 Campbell Avenue in Shirlington.
