Mink Stole and Penny Arcade Will Star in The Mutilated at Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival Prior to New York Run
By Carey Purcell
Tennessee Williams' dark comedy The Mutilated will be staged as part of the eighth annual Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival.
Directed by Cosmin Chivu and starring avant-garde actors Mink Stole as Trinket and Penny Arcade as Celeste, the play will be presented in a Provincetown hotel as a site-specific production Sept. 26-29.
"The story takes place in The French Quarter of New Orleans on Christmas Eve in the 1940s where a chorus of misfits and freaks sing carols about life on the fringes of society," press notes state. "Once the best of friends, they are now locked in a bitter struggle to survive as Celeste threatens to reveal the secret Trinket entrusted to her unless she's paid big bucks."
“This is a role I have been prepping for practically my entire life," Stole said in a statement.
"Tennessee Williams wrote for people like me and people like you," Arcade said in a statement. "And this is the first time that people who actually lived the kind of lives he wrote about (in this play) are going to be playing these roles.”
The play premiered in New York in 1966 as part of a two-play bill called Slapstick Tragedy.
The production will feature original music for Williams' lyrics composed by Jesse Selengut and performed live onstage with his New Orleans swing-style band Tin Pan.
After playing the Festival, The Mutilated will open in New York at The New Ohio Theatre Nov. 1.
The Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival will feature a program of plays, dance, film and performance art organized around the theme Tennessee Williams and Women: 50% Illusion. The festival, which takes place Sept. 26-29, will share with audiences how the depiction of women in Williams' plays changed as women's roles were changing in society.
