New Writing Team Will Workshop Finding Neverland Musical With Diane Paulus
By Adam Hetrick
A revised production of Finding Neverland, directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus, will receive a 2014 workshop in New York City, according to an Equity casting notice.
The workshop, scheduled March 10-29, 2014, reflects a new version of Finding Neverland, which features a new book and songwriting team.
The musical premiered in 2012 at the U.K.'s Curve Theatre, with a score by Tony-nominated Grey Gardens writers Scott Frankel (music) and Michael Korie (lyrics) and a book by Allan Knee, based on his play The Man Who Was Peter Pan. Rob Ashford (Evita, Cat On a Hot Tin Roof) staged the $10 million premiere, which received mix notices.
Earlier this year, Academy and Tony Award-winning producer Harvey Weinstein brought on board U.K. pop songwriters Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy to pen a new score for Finding Neverland, which now has a book by James Graham (This House).
It was previously reported that Finding Neverland would continue forward with contributions from the original writing team; however, Frankel, Korie and Knee are no longer billed as authors on the latest casting notice.
David Chase will serve as musical supervisor for the workshop. Paulus (Pippin, Porgy and Bess) is the artistic director of the American Repertory Theater, which is overseeing the workshop.
The New York Times previously reported that Weinstein had enlisted Tony-winning Chicago and Pippin producer Barry Weissler to help guide Finding Neverland to Broadway. A 2014 Broadway arrival following an A.R.T. test run is a possible goal.
A recent New York reading featured Laura Michelle Kelly, Brian d'Arcy James, Jason Alexander and Kathleen Chalfant in the leading roles.
