By Michael Gioia
West End and Broadway actress Jenna Russell and international Wicked star Willemijn Verkaik are among the performers who will join Broadway composer Andrew Lippa (Big Fish) at his London concert debut Nov. 17 at the St. James Theatre.
As previously announced, the concert will feature songs from Big Fish, his other shows as well as lesser-known work and a selection of "lost" material.
Joining Russell (Sunday in the Park with George) and Verkaik (Wicked) will be Carrie Hope Fletcher, who is currently making her West End debut playing the role of Eponine in Les Misérables at The Queen's Theatre.
Lippa, who was born in Leeds, U.K., and grew up in Detroit, U.S., has been represented previously on Broadway by The Addams Family in 2010 (for which he was Tony-nominated), additional songs and arrangements for You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown and the music for the Broadway production of Aaron Sorkin's The Farnsworth Invention. Off-Broadway credits include The Wild Party (at Manhattan Theatre Club) and john and jen (which has been produced in the U.K. at London's Finborough Theatre). He recently wrote the music and words to the original theatrical oratorio I Am Harvey Milk that received its world premiere in San Francisco in June 2013 with the San Francisco Gay Mens' Chorus starring Laura Benanti and Lippa as Harvey Milk.
Lippa has also been music director for Kristin Chenoweth's shows at the Metropolitan Opera House in NYC in 2007, at Carnegie Hall in 2004, and at the Donmar Warehouse in London in 2002. He has also conducted the San Francisco, Chicago and St. Louis Symphony Orchestras for Chenoweth, among others.
