By Adam Hetrick
Academy Award winner Bill Condon, who is at work on the new stage production of Side Show, has been tapped to rewrite a P.T. Barnum screenplay for Tony winner Hugh Jackman, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The 20th Century Fox film musical "The Greatest Showman on Earth" will star Jackman (The Boy from Oz, "Wolverine") as circus impresario Barnum. Michael Gracey will direct the film that will also focus on Barnum's relationship with soprano Jenny Lind. Condon ("Dreamgirls") is rewriting the original screenplay by Jenny Bicks.
"The Greatest Showman on Earth" is produced by Jackman and Laurence Mark.
Jackman is also involved in the Broadway-aimed musical Houdini, penned by Wicked and Pippin composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The project has been reported for a Chicago out-of-town premiere prior to a Broadway arrival next season. Tony-winning Hairspray and Coast of Utopia director Jack O'Brien will stage Houdini.
