Tony Award Winner Michael Mayer Set for "Broadway Idiot" Screening Q&A
By Carey Purcell
Tony Award winner Michael Mayer, director of the Broadway musical American Idiot, will participate in a Q&A session with New York Times critic Janet Maslin Oct. 28 at 7:30 PM following a screening of the documentary "Broadway Idiot."
The event will be held at the Jacob Burns Film Center and Media Arts Lab.
"'Broadway Idiot' follows Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong from a punk rock concert at Madison Square Garden to the opening of his musical American Idiot on Broadway — only ten blocks away, but worlds apart," press notes state. "From behind the curtain share in the crazy journey of turning the mega-hit album into a punk rock musical — and ultimately see how the world of theatre transformed Billie Joe."
The film features Armstrong alongside Mayer, who helmed American Idiot and contributed to the musical's book, and Tom Kitt, who was the production's music supervisor, arranger and orchestrator. "Broadway Idiot" was directed by Doug Hamilton ("60 Minutes," "Frontline," "NOVA," "American Masters" and company photographer for Atlantic Theater Company).
Produced by Broadway producer Ira Pittelman (American Idiot), the film's creative team also includes cinematographer Dan Krauss, editor Rob Tinworth and sound designer Greg McCleary. Music is by Green Day.
Mayer's directing credits also include Spring Awakening, Everyday Rapture and On a Clear Day You Can See Forever. He will direct the upcoming Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch starring Neil Patrick Harris.
American Idiot began previews March 24, 2010, prior to its Broadway opening April 20. It closed April 24, 2011 after 421 performances and 27 previews. The cast included John Gallagher Jr., Rebecca Naomi Jones, Christina Sajous, Mary Faber, Michael Esper and Stark Sands.
