Red Bull Theater Reading of The Tragedy of Mr. Morn, Directed by Ethan McSweeny, Presented Dec. 9
By Carey Purcell
Red Bull Theater presents Vladimir Nabokov's The Tragedy of Mr. Morn Dec. 9 as part of its Revelation Readings series.
Described as "a dazzling verse romance by the precocious 24-year old author, responding to Revolution with a bloody tale of desire," The Tragedy of Mr. Morn is translated by Thomas Karshan and Anastasia Tolstoy and directed by Ethan McSweeny. The reading features Tala Ashe, Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Corey Hawkins, Drew Ledbetter, Alex Morf, Aaron Clifton Moten, Stephen Friedrich, David Greenspan, Tony Plana, Robert Sella, Susannah Stahlmann and Lee Sellars. Casting is by Pat McCorkle.
"Nabokov's play — the story of an incognito king and his forbidden love for the wife of a banished revolutionary — was never published in Nabokov’s lifetime and lay in manuscript until it appeared in a Russian literary journal in 1997," press notes state. "Written in astonishingly exquisite verse, the play explores this great writer’s major themes: intense sexual desire and jealousy, the elusiveness of happiness, the power of the imagination, and the eternal battle between truth and fantasy — all through the prism of Shakespearean tragedy."
The event also includes a post-play discussion with Karshan.
Translated by Rodney Ackland, Too Clever By Half will be read Dec. 16. "An anarchic, side-splitting satire about a smooth-talking opportunist and his ruthless climb to the top," the play's reading will be directed by Tony nominee Daniel Sullivan and feature Marylouise Burke, Tony nominee Jonathan Groff (Spring Awakening), two-time Tony winner Stephen Spinella (Angels in America) and Tony nominee Tovah Feldshuh (Golda's Balcony).
The season will also include Arden of Faversham, Crimes of Passion, The Country Wife and The Alcestiad.
