Tony Winner Lillias White Will Offer Valentine's Day Concerts for Negro Ensemble Company
By Andrew Gans
The Negro Ensemble Company, Inc. will open its 47th season with Valentine’s Day concerts featuring Tony Award winner Lillias White.
The Broadway favorite will offer A Woman On Love Feb. 14, 2014, at 7 PM and 10 PM in the Langston Hughes Auditorium at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. A VIP reception will follow the second concert.
Charles Weldon, artistic director of the NEC, said in a statement, “Lillias White is a tremendous talent. NEC is very, very excited about finally having the opportunity to showcase her brilliance. Lillias and I have been friends forever, I was her date on a boat trip around the city when she was performing in the show Once on this Island and we have never stopped being dear friends. I cannot say enough about her amazing voice, her commanding presence, and her diversity as an actor. She can do it all with elegance. We are very proud to bring the gift of Lillias to the Schomburg stage, especially for a Valentine’s Day tribute.”
White, a long-time supporter of The Negro Ensemble Company, Inc., added, “I am pleased and proud to contribute my time and energy to benefit The Negro Ensemble Company. The NEC is an integral part of our community and has produced performing artists who have become world renowned. It is imperative that we all, especially those of us who have benefited from involvement with the NEC, stand up and make sure that the work of this organization continues. Our community needs quality theatre. And it’s up to all of us who can to continue this legacy.”
