Daddy Long Legs Musical, With Megan McGinnis and Robert Adelman Hancock, Will Have NYC Industry Presentation
By Adam Hetrick
The two-actor musical Daddy Long Legs, which has enjoyed a robust regional life the past several years, will receive a private New York industry presentation on Jan. 24.
Producers Ken Davenport (Kinky Boots, Macbeth, Godspell) and Michael Jackowitz (How To Succeed in Business..., Seance on a Wet Afternoon) are presenting the readings of the musical by Tony Award-nominated composer-lyricist Paul Gordon (Jane Eyre) and Tony-winning librettist-director John Caird (a Tony winner for Les Miserables), based on the 1912 novel by Jean Webster. Gordon and Caird previously collaborated on the Broadway musical Jane Eyre.
The reading will feature original cast members Megan McGinnis (Les Miserables, Little Women) and Robert Adelman Hancock (Mamma Mia!), who have been with the production since its 2009 premiere.
Daddy Long Legs has musical direction by Laura Bergquist. The current touring production of the musical has scenic and costume design by Olivier Award winner David Farley, lighting design by Paul Toben and orchestrations by Brad Haak. Daddy Long Legs will next be presented Feb. 5-April 5 at the Florida Studio Theatre.
According to the creators: "Daddy Long Legs is set in turn-of-the-century New England, where Jerusha Abbott (McGinnis) is the 'oldest orphan in the John Grier Home' until one day a mysterious benefactor decides to send her to college to be educated as a writer.
Required to write him a letter once a month to practice her literary skills, Jerusha is never to know her benefactor's identity, so she invents one for him: Daddy Long Legs. Although she knows he'll never respond to her letters, Jerusha grows more and more fond of this elusive and kindly "old" gentleman and begins to think of him as the grandfather she never had. But soon another relationship begins to develop in her life.
Jervis Pendleton (Hancock), the well-to-do uncle of one of Jerusha's roommates, introduces her to a world of literature, travel and adventure. Through her correspondence with Daddy Long Legs and her growing intimacy with Jervis, Jerusha's letters chronicle her emergence as a delightfully independent young woman. But there is one startling fact that Jerusha has yet to uncover -- a fact that will change her life forever."
Daddy Long Legs premiered at the Rubicon Theatre Company in 2009, and has had international productions in Canada, Tokyo and London's West End.
