Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun directs and choreographs The Ford’s Theatre's production of the musical Violet, which plays the Washington, DC, venue Jan. 24-Feb. 23. Erin Driscoll stars in the title role.
“I’m excited to be directing this heartfelt musical at Ford’s Theatre,” said director Calhoun in an earlier statement. “As we watch Violet’s journey unfold, the story reminds us to celebrate individuality, make brave choices and to say ‘yes’ in life, instead of focusing on our imperfections. It’s a story that’s rich with vibrant music and an enchanting cast of characters who discover that hope, acceptance and love are the true healing miracles.”
The cast also includes James Gardiner as Monty and Kevin McAllister as Flick with Madeline Botteri, Troy Hopper, Kellee Knighten Hough, Gregory Maheu, Katie McManus, Amy McWilliams, Nova Y. Payton, Stephen F. Schmidt, Chris Sizemore, Bobby Smith, Stephen Gregory Smith and Lauren Williams.
Based on "The Ugliest Pilgrim" by Doris Betts, Violet features music by Jeanine Tesori and lyrics and book by Brian Crawley. The music director is Jay Crowder.
"A touching story of hope, love and healing, Violet," according to press notes, "is set in the early 1960s and follows the story of a physically scarred young woman, who travels across the South in search of a televangelist’s healing miracle. On her journey into Oklahoma, Violet meets Monty and Flick, two soldiers who help her learn about courage, beauty and her own self-worth."
The production also has scenic design by Tobin Ost, costume design by Wade Laboissonniere, lighting design by Michael Gilliam, sound design by David Budries and wig and makeup design by Anne Nesmith. The production team also includes production stage manager Brandon Prendergast and assistant stage manager Kate Kilbane.
Violet will make its Broadway debut later this season starring two-time Tony winner Sutton Foster.
