Evita and Follies Star Florence Lacey Lands Non-Musical Role in The Outgoing Tide
By Andrew Gans
Evita star Florence Lacey, most recently on Broadway in the acclaimed revival of Follies, will make a rare, non-musical outing in March in The Outgoing Tide at the Good Theater in Portland, ME.
Directed by Brian P. Allen, Bruce Graham's play will run March 5-30 at the Good Theater prior to an April 28-May 11 engagement at South Carolina Rep in Hilton Head, SC.
Lacey will be joined onstage by Will Rhys with a third actor to be announced shortly.
About casting Lacey, director Allen told Playbill.com, "Flo brings so much heart and warmth to all of her characters. The role of Peg in The Outgoing Tide is a great fit. Most people know Flo for her musical theatre work. I think everyone will be wowed by her portrayal of this role."
Lacey added, "It's been years since I did a non-musical, [and] it's a strong but vulnerable and well-written role. The subject of aging and its challenges has been interesting to me for a long time. I've been wishing for a musical about this for years. Maybe one day I'll get to sing about it — and working with my friend Brian Allen will be fun, I'm sure."
The play, according to its director, is described as such: "In a summer cottage on Chesapeake Bay, Gunner has hatched an unorthodox plan to secure his family's future but meets with resistance from his wife and son, who have plans of their own. As winter approaches, the three must quickly find common ground and come to an understanding—before the tide goes out. This drama hums with dark humor and powerful emotion."
The production will also feature set design by technical director Stephen Underwood, costume design by Justin Cote and lighting design by Iain Odlin. Michael Lynch is the production stage manager.
The Outgoing Tide premiered in Chicago with John Mahoney and Rondi Reed. An Off-Broadway production took place in 2012 with Michael Learned and Peter Strauss.
