Classic Stage Company Announces John Doyle-Helmed Allegro and Hamlet With Peter Sarsgaard
By Adam Hetrick
Classic Stage Company will produce a revival of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Allegro, helmed by Tony Award winner John Doyle, as well as Peter Sarsgaard in Hamlet as part of its 2014-15 season.
Doyle (Sweeney Todd, Company), who staged Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Passion to acclaim at CSC last season, will direct the 1947 musical Allegro, which has music by Richard Rodgers, with book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Performances will begin in October.
In January 2015, Sarsgaard (CSC's Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters) will take on the central role in Shakespeare's Hamlet. A director has not been announced for the production.
In April, Chris Noth ("Sex and the City," "The Good Wife") will star in Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus under the direction of Andrei Belgrader.
CSC also announced a November "Monday Night Open Rehearsal Series" presentation of Chekhov's The Seagull; The Young Company presentation of A Midsummer Night's Dream (March 2015); and the "First Look Festival" presentation of Charles Mee's Imperial Dreams, freely adapted from the works of Euripides (March 2015).
