Tomorrow Belongs to Me: Cabaret Extends To End of the Year

The Roundabout Theatre Company's Broadway revival of John Kander and Fred Ebb's Cabaret, which recently announced its final weeks ending its long run at Studio 54 on Nov. 2, will extend through at least the end of the year, according to artistic director Todd Haimes.

The production, on par with its long-running predecessors Cats, Miss Saigon and Les Misérables, saw a boost in its box office from theatregoers wanting to catch the show one last time. A production spokesperson confirmed that the announcement of new cast member Adam Pascal spurred a ticket sales increase.

Cabaret, directed by Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall, opened on March 19, 1998, at the Kit Kat Club (Henry Miller's Theatre) after previews from Feb. 13. The production then moved Nov. 12 — due to an accident on the block that shut down the theatre — to the former discotheque Studio 54 where it currently runs.

The non-profit, which recently purchased Cabaret's current home Studio 54, announced that a revival of the Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman musical Assassins will inaugurate the newly-acquired space as Roundabout's new Broadway musical venue in March of 2004.

No casting (or new official close date) has been announced for the show's final days. A return of stars Richardson and Cumming is not out of the question as Richardson said at the 2001 Tony Awards that she was in talks to recreate the role of Sally Bowles when it came time for the production to end.

The musical won the 1998 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical (Natasha Richardson), Best Actor in a Musical (Alan Cumming) and Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Ron Rifkin). It was nominated for six other awards.

The show currently starring Jon Secada (to be replaced Oct. 17 by Pascal), Susan Egan (as Sally Bowles), Tony Roberts (as Herr Schultz), Blair Brown (as Fraulein Schneider) with Rick Holmes, Liz McConahay and Peter Benson.

The many replacement stars that have played in the Emcee and Sally Bowles in Cabaret include Michael C. Hall, Molly Ringwald, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Neil Patrick Harris, Brooke Shields, Jane Leeves, Mary McCormack, Raul Esparza, Joely Fisher, John Stamos, Lea Thompson, Matt McGrath, Katie Finneran, Gina Gershon, Kate Shindle and Deborah Gibson. Polly Bergen, Mariette Hartley, Tom Bosley, Hal Linden, Dick Latessa and Carole Shelley have also appeared in the roles of Schneider and Schultz.
