Mickey Welcomes Micky: Monkees' Dolenz to Join Disney's Aida on Broadway
By Andrew Gans
Micky Dolenz, of "The Monkees" fame, will join the Broadway company of Aida in January 2004. When Dolenz joins the New York cast, he will play opposite Michelle T. Williams (Aida), Will Chase (Radames) and Lisa Brescia (Amneris). Micky Dolenz was one of the stars of the sixties TV show "The Monkees," about a rock-and-roll band. The group sold over 65 million records, and their albums included "The Monkees," "More of the Monkees," "Headquarters" and "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd." Dolenz also starred in the West End musical The Point and later became a producer-director for the BBC and London Weekend Television. In 1996 the Monkees reunited for a 30-year summer tour around the U.S., and Dolenz recently directed the hit TV show "Boy Meets World." His other theatre credits include Grease, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Tom Sawyer. Aida features a book by Linda Woolverton, Robert Falls and David Henry Hwang, sets and costumes by Bob Crowley, lighting by Natasha Katz, choreography by Wayne Cilento and direction by Robert Falls. The musical plays the Palace Theatre — Broadway and 47th Street — and tickets are available by calling the Disney hotline, (212) 307-4747.
