Kushner's Brundibár to Play New York's New Victory in Spring 2006
By Robert Simonson
Brundibár, the children's musical by Tony Kushner (libretto) and Hans Krása and Bohuslav Martinu (music), will reach New York in spring 2006. The work is adapted from Adolf Hoffmeister's libretto for the Krasa children's opera. Maurice Sendak ("Where the Wild Things Are") provides sets and costumes for the new take on the story of two children who try singing in town to help their ailing mother. The show was performed 55 times in the Terezin concentration camp during World War II. Brundibár is slang for bumblebee. The show is slated to play Berkeley Rep this fall. Kushner is the author of the plays Angels in America, Slavs!, Homebody, or Kabul and Caroline, or Change. |
