PHOTO CALL: Sweeney Todd Director Welcomes Some New Company in Cincinnati
By Morgan Allen
February 4, 2006
John Doyle, the iconoclastic director who scored a triumph on Broadway with his unique revival of Sweeney Todd, is at it again. This time, he’s taking on Stephen Sondheim’s seminal musical Company— the show began rehearsals at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park on Jan. 31.
In keeping with the style he’s had developed over years of work, Doyle will stage the piece with actor-musicians—performers who both play the roles and the musical instruments at the same time—including recent Chitty Chitty Bang Bang star Raul Esparza.
Below, Esparza, music supervisor/orchestrator Mary-Mitchell Campbell, executive director Buzz Ward and producing artistic director Edward Stern, as well as performers Leenya Rideout, Elizabeth Stanley, Heather Laws and Doyle are seen at the first rehearsal.
