Tony Winner Bourne's Swan Lake Tours U.S. for 10th Anniversary
By Ernio Hernandez
Tony Award-winning Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake has set off on a 10th anniversary national tour from Tempe, Arizona's Gammage Auditorium with original Broadway cast members.
The ensemble also includes Will Aitchison, Ashley Bain, Rain De Rye Barrett, Emma Bown, Cody Choi, Saranne Curtin, Leigh Daniels, Laurianne Delteil, Ben Dixon, Pia Driver, Aaron Francis, Peter Furness, Glenn Graham, Stuary Goodwin, Rebecca Jackson, Hendrick January, Simon Karaiskos, Daisy-May Kemp, Helen Moore, Alan Mosley, Mbulelo Ndabeni, Dominic North, Oxana Panchenko, Gavin Persand, Sam Plant, Edwin Ray, Victoria Sahakian-Rogers, Paul Rooney, Paul Smethurst, Toby Smith, Damien Stirk, Irad Timberlake, Jose Tirado, Agnes Vandrepote, Simon Wakefield and Chloe Wilkinson.
Bourne's Swan Lake goes against the traditional ballet, which usually features females in tutus, instead casting a bold, all-male take on the swan-focused fantasy work. The work — which is set to the famous Tchaikovsky score — debuted in London in 1995 and landed on Broadway in 1998, earning Bourne Tony Awards for direction and choreography. Swan Lake was later televised on PBS' "Great Performances" and featured in the film "Billy Elliot."
The tour dates (subject to change) are as follows:
Jan. 29-Feb. 4: Gammage Auditorium - Tempe, AZ
Back Row Productions and NETworks Presentations will present the tour in association with New Adventures. The production will play with an international company of 38 dancers with set and costume designs by Lez Brotherson and lighting by Rick Fisher.
Bourne danced his way into the mindset of theatregoers with his stagings of Cinderella (Evening Standard Award), The Car Man (L.A. Drama Critics' Circle Award) and Swan Lake — which earned him an Olivier Award. Recent credits include choreography on the West End staging of Mary Poppins, Play Without Words, My Fair Lady, South Pacific and Edward Scissorhands — which heads out on a UK tour following its current run at Sadler's Well.
