Prom's Back On! Immersive Awesome 80s Prom Returns to NYC for Limited Engagement Beginning May 17
17 May 2014
The Awesome 80s Prom, the long-running, immersive theatrical event that invited theatregoers to prom night, returns for five Saturday evening performances beginning May 17 at New York's new club 42West, located at the bottom of The OUT Hotel on West 42nd Street.
Performances at 8 PM are offered May 17, May 31, June 21, July 26 and Sept. 20 at 42West (located at 514 W. 42nd Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues).
42West is midtown's new 14,000-square foot, blank canvas. The multimedia, multipurpose events and performance space is adjacent to The OUT Hotel and KTCHN Restaurant.
The Awesome 80s Prom, according to press notes, "is the acclaimed interactive experience in the style of Tony 'n' Tina's Wedding set at Wanaget High's Senior Prom...in 1989! All your favorite characters from your favorite 80s movies are at The Prom — from the Captain of the Football Team to the Asian Exchange Student, from the Geek to the hottie Head Cheerleader — and they're all competing for Prom King and Queen."
The audience decides who takes home the title of Prom King and Queen, while retro hits, including "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go!," play in the background.
The Awesome 80s Prom was conceived and directed by Ken Davenport and written by Davenport and "The Class of 1989," a group of performers including Sheila Berezan, Alex Back, Adam Bloom, Anne Bobby, Courtney Balan, Nicole Cicchella, Mary Faber, Stephen Guarino, Jeff Hiller, Emily McNamara, Troy Metcalf, Jenna Pace, Amanda Ryan Paige, Brian Peterson, Jessica West Regan, Kathy Searle, Mark Shunock, Josh Walden, Noah Weisberg, Brandon Williams, Simon Wong and Fletcher Young.
The show ended its nine-year Off-Broadway run Nov. 2, 2013, at The Wall.
In addition to its record-breaking run as the second longest-running, interactive Off-Broadway show, The Awesome 80s Prom has been produced in Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Minneapolis and Baltimore, and as licensed by Samuel French Inc., has been performed in high schools around the country.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
