Carney will stay with the new musical through May 2012. The actor-musician, however, will be on hiatus from the production for a few weeks this winter to star in an upcoming film about the life of the late musician Jeff Buckley. During Carney's absence, the role of Peter Parker will be played by Matthew James Thomas and Matt Caplan.
In a statement Carney said, "I am very excited about the new film project, as Jeff Buckley is such a musical hero of mine. And I am thrilled to be on stage nightly as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. I can't imagine a more wonderful, harder-working company than my mates on Broadway, and I look forward to being with them until shooting begins, and again as soon as we've wrapped."
There has been no announcement about whether Jennifer Damiano, who plays Mary Jane Watson, will extend her contract, which expires Nov. 6, according to The New York Times.
Reeve Carney is the lead singer of the rock band Carney. His acting credits also include Julie Taymor's film version of "The Tempest" and the film version of the acclaimed novel "Snow Falling on Cedars."
Inspired by over 40 years of Marvel comic books, Spider-Man, according to press notes, "follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down when he's bitten by a genetically altered spider and wakes up the next morning clinging to his bedroom ceiling. This bullied science-geek suddenly endowed with incredible powers soon learns, however, that with great power comes great responsibility as villains put both his physical strength and strength of character to the test."
