The film grossed over $26K, averaging $13,100 per screen, kicking off a platform release; it will be distributed to the top 15 markets throughout July.
The French language film stars Emmanuelle Seigner, Polanski's wife, and Mathieu Amalric.
Directed and written by Roman Polanski and co-written by Ives, who penned the award-winning stage adaptation that played Broadway in 2012, the play focuses on a frustrated playwright-director who has been unable to cast the leading role in his stage adaptation of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's "Venus in Furs." A mysterious woman who knows every line of the play enters the audition room with intentions of her own. The lines between passion and obsession, as well as theatre and reality, begin to blur.
The Broadway production starred Hugh Dancy and Nina Arianda, who won a Tony Award for her performance as Vanda. The play also received a nomination for Best Play.
The play lead Theatre Communications Group's list of the most-produced plays scheduled for the 2013-14 season.
