Teri Dale Hansen
The Spokane Symphony presents a tribute to Jerome Kern, featuring many of his compositions as well as a concert performance of the musical Show Boat, March 8 at 8 PM at the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox.
The concert features Teri Dale Hansen as Magnolia and Joy Jacobs as Julie, both of whom performed in the Tony Award-winning 1994 revival. The cast also includes Robert Sims as Joe and Nat Chandler as Ravenal. Morihiko Nakahara conducts.
Show Boat, which features music by Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, is based on Edna Ferber's novel of the same name. The musical follows the performers, stagehands and dockworkers on the Mississippi River show boat the Cotton Blossom, 1887-1927, and features the songs "Ol' Man River," "Make Believe" and "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man."
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
