Sondheim Unplugged, the cabaret-concert series created by Phil Geoffrey Bond that features original and revival cast members from Stephen Sondheim shows performing his material at a grand piano, returns to New York beginning Jan. 9 at 54 Below.
MAC Award winner Bond serves as the director of programming at 54 Below and also hosts the acclaimed series that ran for several years at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. Bond confirmed to Playbill.com that Sondheim Unplugged will enjoy an ongoing run at 54 Below.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
