What show recently impressed you?
There were a lot of great musicals this year, but the one that stands out to me is A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder. What a blast that show is, so funny and creative. I had to go see Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike twice because of the amazing level of comic timing and the hilarious script. Lastly, I have to say I was inspired by an Off Off-Broadway play called Off The Kings Road at Theatre for the New City. It was a nice reminder that great theatre can be found all over New York City any day of the week.
What production are you most excited to see?
I want to see Cabaret. It's a classic, and I'm sorry to say that I've never seen it, so I'm super excited to see this cast.
What play/musical would you most like to revive on Broadway, and which role would you want to play?
Great question. Honestly, I'm still heartbroken over my cast of Million Dollar Quartet closing in New York and moving to Las Vegas. Such a great show, and for me, playing Sam Phillips and hosting that night in history was one of the best jobs I have ever had. I’d love to do it again.
The play that I love and would be elated to put up would be
Ordinary People. A gorgeous piece that deals with a very sad family who struggles to move on after a major loss. I would truly be torn between which character to play because both male roles my age are
so, so good. Since you have given me the power not only to revive it
but also to cast myself - I would play the role of the father, Calvin Jarrett. Oh, wait, no - Dr. Berger, the psychiatrist.
No, no... I'd play Calvin. But I would be jealous every night when the two actors perform their doctors' office scenes. Wow, casting is hard!
What are your current/upcoming projects?
I shot a film over the holidays called "Friends and Romans" that's a great tip of the hat to the mobster genre. It's somewhat of a "Sopranos" reunion for a lot of those actors, but for me and the other hard-nosed FBI agents in the film, it was great to get to work with those iconic TV actors. The film is in post-production now.
