Stephen Sondheim's Company Will Kick Off Cygnet's 2013-14 Season in San Diego
28 Dec 2012
The Cygnet Theatre will kick off its 2013-14 season with the Tony Award-winning musical Company beginning July 5, prior to an official opening July 13, in San Diego.
Cygnet artistic director Sean Murray will direct the musical, which features a score by Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth. Performances will continue through Aug. 18.
Here's how Cygnet bills the modern classic: "On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed New York bachelor Bobby contemplates his unmarried state. Surrounded by 'those good and crazy people, his married friends,' Bobby weighs the pros and cons of married life, leading to one of the most profound conclusions in American Musical Theater. Company was among the first musicals to deal with adult themes and relationships."
Company won six Tony Awards in 1971, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Lyrics, Best Book, Best Direction and Best Scenic Design. The 2006 Broadway revival also won the Tony for Outstanding Revival of a Musical.
The Cygnet Theatre is located at 4040 Twiggs Street in San Diego, CA. For more information, call (619) 337-1525 or visit CygnetTheatre.com.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
