Steve Martin-Edie Brickell Musical Bright Star Premieres at Vassar
12 Jul 2013
Bright Star, the new musical by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, begins its sold-out run July 12 as part of the Vassar & New York Stage and Film Powerhouse Theater season.
Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie (Chicago, Venus in Fur) directs the production that runs through July 14 at Martel Theater on the Vassar College campus in Poughkeepsie, NY. It has a score by Martin ("SNL," "Father of the Bride," "The Jerk") and Brickell of the New Bohemians. Martin also penned the book.
Here's how it's billed: "Bright Star brings to life a stirring story set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The story takes us between 1945 and 1922, as a young man returns from war and uncovers hidden yearnings and dark secrets about his past."
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
