Sting-Brian Yorkey Musical The Last Ship Will Get NYC Reading; John Logan Attached
27 Mar 2013
Tony Award-winning playwright John Logan has joined the creative team of the new Brian Yorkey-Sting musical The Last Ship, which will receive a New York staged reading later this spring, according to an Equity casting notice.
Tony Award-winning director Joe Mantello (Other Desert Cities, The Normal Heart), who staged a previous U.K. reading of the rock musical in early 2012, will helm the two-week reading that will take place April 29-May 11.
It is being produced by Tony Award winner Jeffrey Seller (Rent, In the Heights) and Sting's longtime manager Kathryn Schenker.
The notice also indicates that Yorkey (If/Then), a Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner for Next to Normal, is sharing book writing credit for the project with Red playwright John Logan. The musical has music and lyrics by Sting.
Rob Mathes will serve as musical supervisor with Dan Lipton as musical director during the staged reading.
As previously reported by Playbill.com, The Last Ship incorporates biographical elements from Sting's life and uses his boyhood home, Newcastle, England, for its locale. It features an original score, with a few pre-existing songs from Sting's catalogue, which are given new context in the narrative.
