Multiple Tony winner Susan Stroman, currently represented on Broadway with the new musical Bullets Over Broadway, will helm a production of The Merry Widow for The Metropolitan Opera. Performances will begin Dec. 31, 2014, and continue through Jan. 28, 2015.
The cast will be headed by Renée Fleming as "the beguiling femme fatale who captivates all Paris," according to press notes. The opera star will be joined by Nathan Gunn as Danilo and TheBridges of Madison County's Kelli O'Hara as Valencienne. (Mezzo-soprano diva Susan Graham takes on the title role later in the run.)
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
