Also announced by MTC on June 21 was the world premiere of Nell Benjamin's The Explorers Club, to play the company's Off-Broadway home, New York City Center Stage I.
The Other Place is the second recent instance of MTC picking up another resident New York City not-for-profit company's past work (unusual in the turf-conscious world of NYC troupes). Similarly, Venus in Fur started at Classic Stage Company downtown and was snagged by MTC for a successful Broadway run in fall 2011.
Previews for The Other Place begin Dec. 11 prior to an opening night of Jan. 10, 2013. Three-time Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Laurie Metcalf ("Roseanne," "The Big Bang Theory," November, currently in London's Long Day's Journey into Night) stars in MTC's Broadway-premiere production of "a riveting new thriller by fast-rising playwright" White, who is making his Broadway debut with this title.
Mantello is the two-time Tony Award winner whose work includes Take Me Out, Other Desert Cities, Wicked, Love! Valour! Compassion! and more.
The play had its world premiere at MCC Theater in March 2011. It extended due to popular demand. The Other Place was nominated for two Outer Critics Circle Awards, a Drama League Award, and three Lucille Lortel Awards. Metcalf won an Obie Award and a Lucille Lortel Award for her performance in the production.
Additional casting and creative team for MTC's new production of The Other Place will be announced.
The Other Place joins MTC's previously announced Broadway production of Rebecca Lenkiewicz's new version of An Enemy of the People by Henrik Ibsen, directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes, starring four-time Tony Award winner Boyd Gaines and Emmy Award winner Richard Thomas. MTC will announce a third Broadway production for the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in the coming weeks.
The Explorers Club, on MTC's Off-Broadway schedule, begins May 14, 2013, and opens June 4, 2013. It's billed as "a new madcap comedy" from the Tony-nominated writer of Legally Blonde the Musical. It's set in London in 1879. "The prestigious Explorers Club faces the worst crisis in their history: their acting president wants to admit a woman, and their bartender is terrible," according to MTC. "True, the female candidate is brilliant, beautiful and has discovered a legendary Lost City, but the decision to let in a woman could shake the very foundation of the British Empire, and how do you make such a decision without a decent drink? Grab your safety goggles for some very mad science involving deadly cobras, irate Irishmen and the occasional airship."
The Explorers Club is a recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New American Plays Award.
Director, casting, and creative team will be announced shortly.
The Explorers Club joins MTC's Off-Broadway season, which will also include the New York premiere of Golden Age, the new play by four-time Tony Award winner Terrence McNally, directed by Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie; and the world premiere of The Madrid, the new play by Liz Flahive, directed by two-time Obie Award winner Leigh Silverman starring four-time Emmy Award winner and Tony nominee Edie Falco.
