10 Apr 2014
Producers have released a new commercial for the Australian stage premiere of Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom, which began performances March 25 at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney.
Global Creatures and Bazmark produce the stage production that reunites members of the 1992 film's original creative team, including Lurmann, who co-writes with Craig Pearce, as well as set and costume designer Catherine Martin and choreographer John "Cha Cha" O'Connell.
Strictly Ballroom will officially open April 12. The cast is led by 18-year-old Thomas Lacey ("Dance Academy") as Scott Hastings, opposite Phoebe Panaretos (Oliver!) as Fran.
American songwriters Diane Warren and David Foster are part of a team that includes Australian composers Elliott Wheeler, Sia Furler and Eddie Perfect. The stage production also features songs from the film, including "Love is in the Air," "Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps" and "Time After Time."
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
