Sherman Edwards' Tony Award-winning musical 1776, about the signing of the Declaration of Independence, began Broadway previews March 16, 1969, at the 46th Street Theatre, now known as the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
Playbill is marking the special date with a handful of videos from Broadway, the film, various regional productions and a few starry surprises.
The 1997 Broadway revival performs at the Tony Awards.
