THE SCREENING ROOM: Happy Birthday, Dick Van Dyke (Video)
13 Dec 2012
Tony Award winner and screen legend Dick Van Dyke celebrates his birthday Dec. 13. Here, Playbill.com looks back at his career, including clips from film, television, Broadway and more.
Van Dyke, who won the Tony Award in 1961 for his performance in Bye Bye Birdie, has also been seen on Broadway in The Girls Against the Boys and The Music Man as well as in Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life as a guest star. Van Dyke is known for his work in such films as "Mary Poppins," "Bye Bye Birdie" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" as well as his television show, "The Dick Van Dyke Show."
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
