Tony Award-winning composers and musical theatre legends Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber share a wealth of common ground: Both have written long-running Broadway sensations, taken home multiple Tony Awards and even share the same birthday.

In celebration of their March 22 shared birthday, we honor Sondheim, who turns 83, and Lloyd Webber, who turns 65, with a look back at their careers in music and theatre.

Sondheim, who won Original Score Tony Awards for his work on Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods and Passion — not to mention a Tony for Lifetime Acheivement in 2008 — was represented on Broadway last season with the critically acclaimed revival of Follies. His Tony-winning Into the Woods was also seen last summer in a Shakespeare in the Park production at the Delacorte Theater. His Passion currently plays Off-Broadway.

Lloyd Webber, who won Original Score Tony Awards for his work on Evita, Cats and Sunset Boulevard, is represented on Broadway with the long-running The Phantom of the Opera, which celebrated its 25th anniversary Jan. 26. Read the feature story about the star-studded evening.

Happy birthday, Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber!

Sondheim receives his first Tony Award in 1971 for Company.
