22 Mar 2012
Tony Award-winning composers and musical theatre legends Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber share a wealth of common ground: Both have written long-running Broadway sensations, taken home multiple Tony Awards and even share the same birthday.
In celebration of their March 22 shared birthday, we honor Sondheim, who turns 82, and Lloyd Webber, who turns 64, with a look back at their careers in music and theatre.
Sondheim, who won Original Score Tony Awards for his work on Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods and Passion—not to mention the Tony for Lifetime Acheivement in 2008—was represented this season with the critically acclaimed Broadway revival of Follies. His Tony-winning Into the Woods will also be seen in an upcoming Shakespeare in the Park production at the Delacorte Theatre this summer.
Featuring the Broadway classics “To Life (L’Chaim!),” “If I Were A Rich Man,” “Sunrise Sunset,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” and “Tradition,” Fiddler on the Roof will introduce a new generation to this uplifting celebration that raises its cup to joy! To love! To life!
