THE SCREENING ROOM: Into the Woods' Donna Murphy Sings on Stage and Screen (Video)
27 Jul 2012
Tony Award winner Donna Murphy, who originated the role of Fosca in the Stephen Sondheim-James Lapine musical Passion, is on familiar dramatic turf in the Shakespeare in the Park production of Into the Woods.
Sondheim and Lapine also collaborated on the fairytale musical that is receiving an al fresco staging at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Murphy takes on the role of the Witch, delivering such songs as "Stay With Me" and "Last Midnight."
Playbill.com has collected some of Murphy's stage and screen performances to celebrate her current role.
Murphy performs "Hit Me With a Hot Note and Watch Me Bounce" on the television series "What About Joan." Look closely, that's Tony-nominated Grey Gardens and Far From Heaven composer Scott Frankel at the piano.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
