THE SCREENING ROOM: Playbill Video Warms Up With the Newsies (Video)
07 May 2012
Broadway's Newsies received a 2012 Tony Award nomination for the athletic, balletic, kinetic choreography created by Christopher Gattelli. Playbill Video recently caught up with the show's dancers, who offered an exclusive peek at their special pre-show warm-up routine at the Nederlander Theatre.
Here, the four dancers chat with Playbill about Gattelli's choreography, which is designed to tell story through dance. "It's absolutely story," Gattelli told Playbill.com. "Even when they back-flip, what that represents is their vitality and their energy and their youth."
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
