28 Sep 2012
On June 18 a starry line-up of talent from Broadway and downtown united to celebrate the legacy of late entertainer Judy Garland in Night of a Thousand Judys at Playwrights Horizons.
The second annual event, a tribute to all things Judy Garland, benefited for the Ali Forney Center and its mission to assist LGBT homeless youth. It was a special installment of Justin Sayre's variety show, The Meeting*.
The night featured appearances and performances by Tony winner Tonya Pinkins (Jelly's Last Jam; Caroline, or Change), Ashley Brown (Mary Poppins), Molly Pope (Wonderful Town, Our Hit Parade), recording artist-actress Nellie McKay (Threepenny Opera) and more.
Playbill.com is giving our readers a first-look at several exciting performances from the evening.
The next Meeting* on Oct. 18 at the Duplex will celebrate Funny Girl. For tickets visit BrownPaperTickets.com.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
