THE SCREENING ROOM: "Unexpected Song" Diva Performances (Video)
18 Sep 2012
In 1985 the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Song and Dance premiered on Sept. 18 at the Royale Theatre for a 474-performance run. Bernadette Peters won her first Tony for her performance in the production.
The musical introduced New York audiences to such songs as "Tell Me On a Sunday," "Nothing Like You've Ever Known" and "Unexpected Song." Playbill.com has collected some of the various renditions of "Unexpected Song" over the years.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
