On March 18 five-time Tony Award winner Angela Lansbury opened in Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit at the West End's Gielgud Theatre, marking her first stage appearance in London for nearly 40 years.
Lansbury reprises the role of Madame Arcati in Blithe Spirit that she previously played in a Tony-winning performance on Broadway in 2009. Michael Blakemore again directs, and Simon Jones reprises his performance as Dr. Bradman, newly joined by Charles Edwards, Janie Dee and Jemima Rooper. Also in the cast are Serena Evans and Patsy Ferran, with Sandra Dickinson, Sarah Lawn, Hugh Osborne and Melissa Woodbridge as understudies.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
