Theatregoer Topples Onto Lyceum Theatre Marquee Prior to May 19 Matinee of The Nance
20 May 2013
A theatregoer at the May 19 matinee performance of The Nance had to be rescued by members of the New York City Fire Department after he fell onto the marquee of the Lyceum Theatre when a window gave way unexpectedly.
The patron, who was in attendance for the new Douglas Carter Beane play that stars Tony Award winner Nathan Lane, was seated directly in front of the windows in the theatre's second mezzanine level just prior to the start of the 3 PM matinee. The French door style windows open out onto 45th Street.
A source told Playbill.com that the patron leaned back in his chair, prompting the window fixture to open and causing him to topple two to three feet onto the marquee of the Lyceum Theatre.
The NYC Fire Department rescued the patron from the marquee shortly thereafter using a cherry picker outside the theatre. No glass was broken, and the patron was treated for minor injuries.
The cast of The Nance was unaware of the occurrence, and the performance began as scheduled.
One of the smaller gems in the Shubert Organization's crown of Broadway theatres, the Lyceum is Broadway's oldest continually operating legitimate theatre. It was built in 1903 and has been operated by the Shubert Organization since 1950.
"The safety of our patrons is a top priority of the Shubert Organization. The causes of yesterday's accident at the Lyceum are being investigated this morning," The Shubert Organization said in a statement. "We extend our sincere apologies to Mr. George Poulos. We are monitoring his condition, offering our support and wishing him a speedy recovery. We conduct regular safety inspections of all our theatres. We regret yesterday's incident and will continue to take whatever steps are needed to prevent any future problems. Again, we offer our sincere apologies to Mr. Poulos."
Tony Award-winning director Jack O'Brien (The Coast of Utopia, Hairspray) staged the Lincoln Center Theater production that began previews March 21 and officially opened April 15. The Nance recently extended its run through Aug. 11.
