21 Apr 2014
Theatreworks USA's benefit concert of the new musical The Lightning Thief, directed by Stephen Brackett and choreographed by Sam Pinkleton, is held April 21 at 7 PM at Off-Broadway's Lucille Lortel Theatre.
Rounding out the cast are Parker Drown, Abe Goldfarb, Eric Meyers, Sarah Beth Pfeifer, Kristin Stokes and Jordan Stanley.
Based on the first book in the best-selling Percy Jackson and The Olympians series by Rick Rorian, The Lightning Thief features a book by Joe Tracz with music and lyrics by Rob Rokicki.
The musical, according to press notes, is the "story of Percy, a 12-year-old boy who journeys into a world of mythological monsters and Greek Gods as he struggles with dyslexia and ADHD, and coming to terms with a father he has never known, while solving the mystery of Zeus' stolen lightning bolt."
The concert supports Theatreworks USA's annual Free Summer Theatre Program, which provides free live theatre to more than 15,000 kids in New York City each summer.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
