Third Time's the Charm: Diane Paulus Receives First Tony Award With Her Third Tony-Winning Revival

Diane Paulus took home her first Tony Award June 9 for her direction of the Tony Award-winning, cirque-inspired revival of Pippin; in fact, all of the Broadway revivals helmed by the director have taken home the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical.

How did it feel to finally receive the Tony?

"It feels pretty good," Paulus told following her win for Best Direction of a Revival of a Musical. "I'm just so proud of this company and so humbled to have this chance to work on this musical I saw when I was eight years old... Having the opportunity to direct it and to be at the Tony Awards and win the Tony Award is a surreal dream come true... Through so many people giving me a shot, I finally had a chance."

Paulus was previously nominated for the Best Direction of Hair and The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess, her two previous Broadway credits that took home Tony Awards in 2009 and 2012, respectively, for Best Revival of a Musical.

When reviving a classic, Paulus said, "You think, 'What do I love about that show?' I'm thinking about what [audiences] want to see again." The Tony-winning revival of Pippin stayed true to its Bob Fosse roots, while interspersing cirque-style acrobatics and tricks.

Aside from Best Revival of a Musical and Best Director, Pippin was awarded Tony Awards for Best Leading Actress ( Patina Miller) and Best Featured Actress ( Andrea Martin).
