Richard Griffiths, the Tony and Olivier Award-winning actor currently back on Broadway in Equus, will take part in the annual Macy's Herald Square Tree Lighting ceremony Nov. 23.
The 6:30 PM event will feature Griffiths reading the classic holiday poem "The Night Before Christmas." He will be joined by Kermit the Frog, Grandma from the Big Apple Circus, The Mistletones, and, of course, a special appearance by Santa Claus.
Macy's holiday windows will also be unveiled Nov. 23.
The ceremony will be held at Macy's Herald Square, located on Broadway between 34th and 35th Street.
Equus is playing a limited engagement at the Broadhurst Theatre through Feb. 8, 2009. Tickets, priced $61.50-$116.50, are available by calling (212) 239-6200 or by visiting www.telecharge.com. Fifty-two onstage seats are available for each performance.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
