Tony Award-winning actress Laura Benanti has joined the starry cast of the new Jeffrey Lane-David Yazbek musical Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, a Lincoln Center Theater production, which will arrive on Broadway Oct. 2 at the Belasco Theatre.

Benanti (In the Next Room for Lincoln Center Theater) will play Candela in Women on the Verge. The musical will be a reunion for Benanti and Patti LuPone, who was previously announced to star as Lucía in the world premiere musical. Both Benanti and LuPone earned 2008 Tony Awards for their performances in the classic Broadway musical Gypsy.

Women on the Verge will also star the previously announced Sherie Rene Scott (Everyday Rapture, The Little Mermaid), Brian Stokes Mitchell (Ragtime, Man of La Mancha), Danny Burstein (South Pacific), de'Adre Aziza (Passing Strange), Mary Beth Peil (Nine, Sunday in the Park With George) and Nikka Graff Lanzarone (Seussical).

Here's how LCT bills Women on the Verge: "Both touching and hilarious, it's a story about women and the men who pursue them... finding them, losing them, needing them, and rejecting them. At the center is Pepa (Scott) whose friends and lovers are blazing a trail through 1980s Madrid. And why do they all keep showing up at her high-rise apartment? Is it her gazpacho? Along with Pepa, there's her missing (possibly philandering) lover, Ivan (Mitchell); his ex-wife of questionable sanity, Lucia (LuPone); Pepa's friend, Candela (Benanti), and her terrorist boyfriend; a power-suited lawyer (Aziza) plus a taxi driver (Burstein) who dispenses tissues, mints and advice in equal proportion. Mayhem and comic madness abound, balanced by the empathy and heart that are trademarks of Almodóvar's work. And of Bartlett Sher's too."

Lanzarone will be Marisa, the fiancé of Lucía and Iván's son Carlos; and Peil will portray the Concierge.

Based on Pedro Almodóvar's 1988 film of the same title, Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher (South Pacific, Light in the Piazza) will stage the musical that has a score by Yazbek and a book by Lane.

Women on the Verge will have choreography by Christopher Gattelli, musical direction by Jim Abbott, sets by Michael Yeargan, costumes by Catherine Zuber, lighting by Brian MacDevitt and sound by Scott Lehrer. The musical reunites the Tony Award-winning creative team from LCT's South Pacific, with the addition of MacDevitt and Abbott.

Tickets for Women on the Verge will go on sale to the general public Aug. 30. Visit LCT.org The Belasco Theatre is located at 111 West 44th Street.
