"Gore Vidal: The United States of Amnesia," released by IFC Films, will play in New York at the IFC Center & Lincoln Plaza May 23 and in Los Angeles at the Nuart Theatre June 6, with a national release to follow. Here is a look at the film's trailer.
Directed by Nicholas Wrathall, the film features the final on-camera interviews with the iconic American writer, essayist and intellectual. Interviews with Vidal, Burr Steers, Christopher Hitchens, Jodie Evans, Tim Robbins, Mikhail Gorbachev, Sting, David Mamet, Bob Scheer, William F. Buckley, Jay Parini, Norman Mailer, Nina Straight and Dick Cavett are included.
Here's how the "The Unites States of Amnesia" is billed: "No twentieth-century figure has had a more profound effect on the worlds of literature, film, politics, historical debate, and the culture wars than Gore Vidal. Anchored by intimate one-on-one interviews with the man himself, 'Gore Vidal' is a fascinating and wholly entertaining portrait of the last lion of the age of American liberalism."
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
