Triad Stage Will Reimagine My Fair Lady for Cast of Ten; Julia Osborne and Michael McKenzie to Star
29 Mar 2013
Triad Stage will present a reimagined production of My Fair Lady, the Tony Award-winning musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, beginning April 7, prior to an official opening April 12, at the Triad's Pyrle Theater in Greensboro, NC.
Directed by Bryan Conger, the limited engagement will continue through May 5.
"We will only have ten actors playing all the characters," said director Conger in a statement. "Ultimately, it is a story about change and the transformative power we can have on another human being."
The cast includes Julia Osborne (Lincoln Center Theater's national tour of South Pacific) as Eliza Doolittle, Michael McKenzie (The Man Who Came to Dinner, Waiting in the Wings) as Henry Higgins, Bill Raulerson as Colonel Pickering and Nick Cartell (Jesus Christ Superstar) as Freddy.
Rounding out the ensemble by portraying more than 20 characters between them are Scott Pattison, Rob Kahn, Miranda Barnett, David Coolidge and husband-and-wife team Gordon Joseph Weiss and Rosie McGuire in their fourth Triad Stage production together (A Christmas Carol, Tartuffe and Tobacco Road).
Here's how Triad bills the classic: "Henry Higgins is rich. Eliza Doolittle is poor. He's proper. She's common. He's educated. She's streetwise. But a boastful bet will change both their lives forever. As he transforms the lowly flower girl into a sophisticated lady, they discover more about themselves than they ever expected. From cockney weddings to the street where you live, Triad Stage re-imagines this unlikely love story with an intimate, inventive approach."
Triad Stage is also using a two-piano version of the score arranged by Loewe's dance arranger, Trude Rittman. In keeping the music simple, Triad Stage is "keeping all of what audiences love about this classic while allowing them to explore the story in a way they have never experienced."
Triad will offer pay-what-you-can performances April 16-17; a sign-interpreted performance, with services provided by the Greensboro Communication Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, April 23; Technically Talking, a behind-the-scenes discussion with members of the design team, April 9; PostScript, a discussion with the cast, April 18; and The InSight Series, with a noted expert who will be discussing the world of the play, April 14. For My Fair Lady, Dr. Bob Hansen, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of Theatre at UNCG, will be speaking about the Golden Age of Musical Theatre.
The Pyrle Theater is located at 232 South Elm Street in downtown Greensboro, NC. For more information and tickets, call (336) 272-0160 or visit TriadStage.org.
