The Nude and Naughty History of Broadway Bares
A two-time Tony winner for best choreography (in 2005 he won for La Cage aux Folles and in 2013 he won for Kinky Boots), choreographer and director Jerry Mitchell started his career as a Broadway dancer and ensemble performer. In the midst of the AIDS crisis, Mitchell wanted to find a way to help. After some goading from friends at The Will Rogers Follies, he hopped up onto a bar is his barely-there Indian of the Dawn costume and Broadway Bares was born. Mitchell sat down with Playbill to celebrate 30 Days of Pride and to give a look back at the nude and naughty history of the now iconic Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS fundraiser. Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
