The Howard Ashman Award will be presented to Tony Award-winning playwright and librettist Terrence McNally, whose "art and activism have profoundly affected the visibility and understanding of HIV/AIDS," according to press notes. McNally will be represented on Broadway this season with It's Only a Play, which begins previews Aug. 28.
The Award, named for lyricist Ashman, who passed away in 1991 due to complications from AIDS, is given annually to "honor theater professionals who have made a difference in the fight to end the epidemic."
The evening will feature songs with lyrics written by Ashman, including those from Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid, among others. Songs from musicals penned by McNally, including Ragtime, The Full Monty and Kiss of the Spider Women, will also be showcased.
Performing artists will be announced at a later date.
Tickets start at $125. Click here for more information.
